Ranjan Gogoi, former Chief Justice of India and sitting Member of the Upper House of the Indian parliament was born in 1955 in District Dibrugarh of Assam State. He was born to the Tai-Ahom family in the northeast region of India. Her mother belongs to the Ahom kingdom of the region. His father Kesab Chandra Gogoi was a politician of state politics and served as the CM of the Assam for some time. He completed his schooling at the Don Bosco School in Dibrugarh, Which was just walking distance from his home.
After schooling he moved to Delhi and started preparing for Civil Services and Graduation from St, Stephen’s College as the wish of his father. Although he did not succeed in civil service exams and moved to pursue a Law degree from Delhi University. His father once told his political colleague that his son Ranjan Gogoi would become Chief Justice of India when he was offered as the chief minister of Assam. His father’s thoughts became prophetic for his son.

After completing his law degree he moved back to his native place and decided to join the Bar Council of Assam State High Court Guwahati and Started practicing as a Lawyer. He was promoted as senior counsel of the high court in the late nineties decade of the 20th century. Soon he was promoted to the permanent Judge of the High Court of Assam in 2001. During his service as the Judge of the High Court, he was known for his decisions on famous cases including combining similar cases, in which he resolved around 10000 cases of the Educational Department.
